Valeda Light Therapy for Dry Macular Degeneration
New Hope for Dry AMD
Without Injections, Surgery, or Downtime

A dry AMD diagnosis doesn't have to mean accepting declining vision. For the first time, there is an FDA-authorized treatment shown to improve visual acuity in dry AMD patients, not just slow the disease, but measurably improve how well you see. At Eye Centers of Racine & Kenosha, we offer the Valeda Light Delivery System as part of our commitment to giving patients access to care that's current, evidence-based, and effective.

What Is Valeda Light Therapy?

Valeda is a revolutionary, non-invasive light-based treatment system developed by LumiThera, Inc.

It uses a process called photobiomodulation (PBM), which delivers precise wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to the retina to stimulate the eye's own cellular repair mechanisms. The targeted light wavelengths activate mitochondrial activity within retinal cells, which boosts their ability to produce energy, reduce inflammation, and resist the cellular breakdown that drives dry AMD progression. Valeda works with your eye's natural biology to slow disease progression and support healthier vision.

Until Valeda, dry AMD had no FDA-authorized treatment proven to actually improve visual acuity. It is the first time patients with dry AMD have had an FDA-authorized option proven to do more than slow the disease.

What to Expect During Treatment

One of Valeda's most appealing qualities is how simple and comfortable the treatment experience is. There are no needles, no surgical instruments, no medications, and no recovery period required.

Here's what a typical Valeda treatment cycle looks like:

You'll simply sit comfortably in front of the Valeda device while gentle, calibrated light is directed toward the retina. There is no pain, no dilation required, and no downtime afterward. Most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately.

  • Initial treatment series: 9 sessions per eye, delivered over 3 to 5 weeks
  • Maintenance treatments: Follow-up sessions are typically scheduled every 4 months to sustain the benefits
  • Session duration: Each treatment session is brief, just a few minutes per eye

The treatment does not require any special preparation, and the vast majority of patients tolerate it extremely well.

What Does the Research Show?

Valeda's efficacy is backed by rigorous clinical trial data. In clinical trials, patients who received photobiomodulation therapy with the Valeda system experienced measurable, meaningful improvements across multiple outcomes:

Improved visual acuity — patients gained an average of more than one line on the eye chart after both one and two years of treatment

Reduced drusen volume — drusen are the small yellow deposits that accumulate in the retina and are a hallmark of dry AMD; treated patients showed a measurable reduction in these deposits

Slowed geographic atrophy progression — significantly fewer treated patients developed geographic atrophy (an advanced, vision-robbing stage of AMD) compared to those who received a placebo treatment

After approximately two years, clinical trials showed that patients treated with the Valeda system had improved visual acuity by roughly one full line on standardized eye charts compared to those who went untreated. For someone with AMD, gaining or preserving that level of vision can mean the difference between reading independently, recognizing loved ones' faces, and maintaining a driver's license.

Who Is a Candidate for Valeda?

Valeda is specifically indicated for patients with dry AMD who fall within a particular range of visual impairment. Valeda is most effective for patients in the early to intermediate stages of dry AMD who still retain meaningful central vision. The earlier treatment begins, the better positioned you are to preserve the vision you have.

Valeda is not recommended for individuals with wet AMD, those with advanced central macular atrophy, or patients with known photosensitivity or light-activated neurological conditions such as epilepsy or migraines.

Our team will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine whether Valeda is appropriate for your specific situation.
